FAQ

Why don't responsible gun owners join gun-control groups to try to work out measures to preserve both the Second Amendment and innocent lives?
I have my own questions:Why is the burden and onus ALWAYS put on responsible gun owners to give up our rights and guns? We have compromised countless times. Gun control laws don’t stop crime, but the gun grabbers will not acknowledge this fact. We can’t get anywhere in a debate when the opposition displays such willful ignorance. “There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.“Why are the gun grabbers so fixated on the inanimate object and not the criminal? I don’t recall anyone vilifying the bomb that bombers used in a terrorist act, such as the Boston Marathon. They rightfully went after the bomber, not the bomb. Why are we, responsible gun owners, asked to pay for the crimes and sins of others? How is this just, fair, and reasonable? I don’t hear anyone proposing to ban cars because some drunk driver destroyed a family in a head-on collision on the freeway. And don’t tell me that is NOT a fair comparison. Why can’t the gun grabbers be honest with us responsible gun owners and just admit that they want ALL our guns? All of them. Stop lying to us, so we can have an honest debate. Out with it! Speak the truth! We responsible gun owners are being honest and are pushing back against your vindictive, relentless attacks upon us. Stop attacking us, and leave us alone. But you won’t, will you? It is you who continue to throw gasoline on the fire.I’ll simplify this debate so even a child can understand it:*You want to take our guns*We will not let you have them*Your move
Why don't responsible gun control activists join the pro-gun groups to try to work out measures to preserve, both the Second Amendment and innocent lives?
A larger issue is the lack of knowledge and the unwillingness of anti-gun rights people to learn the facts before they start talking. Just surveying Quora and some of the questions, you can see the same mis-information being spread in the form of the questions asked. Surveying our politicians is even scarier:"Well, you know, my shotgun will do better for you than your AR-15, because you want to keep someone away from your house, just fire the shotgun through the door." - Joe Biden Sorry Joe, If you do that you will go to jail (maybe not you but anyone else)." Some of these bullets, as you saw, have an incendiary device on the tip of it, which is a heat seeking device. So, you don't shoot deer with a bullet that size. If you do you could cook it at the same time." - Patricia Eddington She believes that heat seeking bullets (like AA missiles) exist."This is a ghost gun. This right here has the ability with a .30-caliber clip to disperse with 30 bullets within half a second. Thirty magazine clip in half a second." - Kevin de Leon Do the math on that one. Aside from the fact that most firearms owners cannot own automatic weapons. 3600 rounds per minute?"The Second Amendment only protects the people who want all the guns they can have. The rest of us, we've got no Second Amendment. What are we supposed to do?" - Louise Slaughter Last time I looked, the Constitution applies to all of us."What's the efficacy of banning these magazine clips? I will tell you... these are ammunition, they're bullets. So the people who have those now, they're going to shoot them, so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won't be any more available." - Diana DeGette A person who can’t spend the time to learn the difference between a bullet and a magazine is making gun law. Imagine what she is doing with more complex issues."Well, if it can fire a lot of bullets very quickly, that's a good definition... And then you can argue what a lot is, okay, let's say three. If you haven't hit the deer with three shots, you're a pretty lousy shot, that deer deserves to get away." - Michael Bloomberg He has all that money to spend and he doesn’t take a little to learn what he is talking about."We lose 93 million Americans a day to gun violence." - Terry McAuliffe Do the math on this one as well. How many people heard that statement and just believed it?"I actually don't know what a barrel shroud is. I believe it's a shoulder thing that goes up." - Carolyn McCarthy She was trying to pass legislation to ban barrel shrouds. She admits that she doesn’t know what they are or what they do but she KNOWS that they should be banned."We have federal regulations and state laws that prohibit hunting ducks with more than three rounds. And yet it's legal to hunt humans with 15-round, 30-round, even 150-round magazines." - Dianne Feinstein When did they pass a law making it legal to hunt humans? Is it a state thing? Is there a season?"...it is easier for a 12- or 13-year-old to purchase a gun, and cheaper, than it is for them to get a book." - Barack Obama Cheaper? Can anyone show a place in the United States that allows a 12 or 13 year old to legally purchase a firearm? The AR in AR-15 does not stand for Assault RifleThe number of school shootings is greatly exaggerated and when called on it, the federal government refused to amend it’s report. When a great bastion of Conservative thinking like NPR calls shenanigans, we should take note. The School Shootings That Weren'tWhy is the AR-15 being singled out? Because it is a bright shinny thing that politicians can talk about rather than talk about the real issues. It is a popular rifle (maybe the most popular) because it is relatively inexpensive (not cheap), accurate, and customizable.Nobody is making light of the deaths of all of the innocent victims of any shooting but if you ignore the political hay making and look at facts you will learn that the US does not have the highest death rate (per million population) from mass shooting in the advanced world. That honor goes to Norway, the US is number 11. https://www.investors.com/politi... Norway is an outlier with 1 shooting killing 77 people in 2011.If 10 countries with stricter gun control laws than the US have more deaths by mass shootings, how will more gun control help?Let’s get back to the US.Here is a graph of the murder and non-negligent homicide rate in the US for 1960–2010.Maybe it is pure coincidence but the drop after 1990 matches the increase in states changing their firearms carry laws to “Shall Issue” from “May Issue” or “No Issue”.Gun control and gun violence is a major issue that needs to be discussed rationally based on facts and not fear mongering. One last quote:It's not a gun control problem, it's a cultural control problem. I’m writing a book and I’m trying to work out how I can make my story fill a full length novel. What details should I include and what should I leave out?
Basically, you put your main character in a situation where something bad has happened, and she has to do something she doesn’t want to in order to fix it, with a nice ticking clock and something terrible which will happen if she doesn’t succeed, and you keep throwing shit at her until she learns whatever is necessary to change. If your story won’t fill a novel, it may not have enough content for a full novel and you should think about a novella. Adding in extra bits to make it longer also makes it boring.
What would happen if a nuclear fusion reactor were to go out of control? How would this happen and what measures would we as humans take to bring it back under control?
Very little, outside the immediate reactor building. A fusion reactor contains only about a second's worth of fuel at any time, in contrast to a fission reactor which contains about ten year's worth (and even then the fuel is only partly consumed). So the total amount of energy that can be released is only a second's worth of the output of the power station. This is probably of the same order as the energy held in the heat exchangers, steam pipes, and spinning turbines of the generating system, the worst credible accident is of the same order as the worst credible accident in a fossil fuel powered generating system of the same power.Furthermore, since fusion stops as soon as the containment vessel or its magnetic coils are disrupted, it is unlikely that all of that energy would be released. And the "unburned" fuel reverts to ordinary hydr-  effectively harmless in this case.Of course, the explosion would almost certainly blast the reactor vessel to pieces, and the reactor walls are probably pretty radioactive. So the power station site might have some pretty noxious radioactive debris thrown around. This would be pretty bad for the staff on duty - as would be a worst-case explosion in a conventional power station. But most of the isotopes involved are likely to be pretty short lives, so radiation levels would die down over a few years and the site would probably be safe with a small amount of radiation cleanup within a decade or so.So it would be no more dangerous, and probably considerably less dangerous, than any large industrial manufacturing plant, such as a chemical plant or refinery.
If you work as a dishwasher and the dishes come out too hot to touch and stack in their places, would it be considered an unsafe work practice? How hot would be too hot for it to be considered unsafe?
How hot is unsafe depends on what the material is, because it matters how it conducts heat. Too hot for touching copper is anything above 60C/140F. Other, less thermally conductive stuff may be considerably hotter and still be able to be handled. Moisture can change things, too. [1]If you’re experiencing pain upon touching the dishes coming out of a dishwasher, ask your employer for help correcting the problem. It may help to open the dishwasher and wait a while. Even 30 seconds or a minute might be enough. You could also get insulated gloves. If your country has an occupational safety and health department, look to them for information, and for help if your employer doesn’t have a satisfactory response when you ask clearly.Footnotes[1] Too Hot to Handle?
